PCAC honors January Athletes-of-the-Month

With all the nominations in, the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has chosen its athletes-of-the-month for January.  Athletes from San Diego City College, San Bernardino Valley College, MiraCosta College and Grossmont College headline the group.

With basketball in high gear and the spring sports just starting out, four basketball players have been chosen for the month of January.  San Diego City's Joseph Riley and San Bernadino Valley's Eric Hancik were chosen on the men's side while MiraCosta's Chynna Cochran and Grossmont's Chiara Mattern were recognized on the women's side. 

ATHLETES-OF-THE-MONTH (MEN)

Joseph Riley, San Diego City (basketball)

Riley, a sophomore from Los Alamitos High, scored in double figures in all eight games during January, averaging of 15.2 points-per-game.  He helped lead the Knights to five wins and a 2-1 start in PCAC South play.   Riley hit four three-pointers on his way to 19 points in a 79-36 win over Barstow to open the new year at the MiraCosta Tournament. He then totaled 17 points, five rebounds, and five assists two days later in an 83-68 win over Miramar to help the Knights claim 3rd place in the tournament. Riley also scored 17 points and dished out four assists in an 85-75 home win over Mesa.  For the month, he knocked down a total of 23 shots from beyond the arc and now ranks 26th in the state with 60 made three-pointers. Riley went 24-for-29 from the free throw line in January and is shooting 86 percent on the season, which is 7th best in the state.

Eric Hancik, San Bernardino Valley (basketball)

Hansik is part of a San Bernardino Valley squad that went 9-0 during the month of January.  The freshman scored in double-digits in seven games this past month, including an 18-point performance against Palomar College on January 23.  Hansik averaged 11.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists-per-game for the month of January. 

ATHLETES-OF-THE-MONTH (WOMEN)

Chynna Cochran, MiraCosta (basketball)

Cochran led MiraCosta to a 4-2 record in January, with both losses coming against teams ranked in the top-20 in the state.  Cochran scored in double-digits in all six games, averaging 15.3 points-per-game for the Spartans.  Her best performances of the month came in back-to-back games against San Diego City College and Mt. San Jacinto College where she scored 17 points in each game, making 12-of-21 shots from the field.

Chiara Mattern, Grossmont (basketball)

Mattern is the leading scorer on the season for Grossmont.  In five games in January, the freshman guard out of Ramona has totaled 83 points for an average of 16.6 points-per-game. Of those 83 points, 30 were scored against Southwestern College (Jan. 30), including eight three-pointers. She also went 5-of-7 from long range against College of the Desert when she totaled 20 points on January 16.
