(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Women's Volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday, September 1, hosting its first Tri-Tournament of the season. The Mounties managed to secure a solid victory against Santa Monica, winning 3-0, but faced a tough loss to San Diego Mesa with a score of 0-3.
In the match against Santa Monica, the Mounties dominated with scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-19. However, after a break, when Mesa overpowered Santa Monica with another 3-0 victory, Mt. SAC could not keep up in the afternoon match, ending with scores of 25-22, 25-13, 25-16.
This split leaves Mt. SAC with a 3-3 record for the season.
Leading the charge in the sweep over against Santa Monica were the freshman outside hitters, Andrea Brewer, who recorded 2 service aces and 5 digs, and Candace Ceballos, with an impressive .368 kill percentage, 2 service aces, and 9 digs, contributing 9 and 8 kills, respectively. Sophomore outside hitter Melissa Polich added seven kills to the mix.
Sophomore setter Capri Salmon deserves a special mention for tallying more assists (30) than Santa Monica's entire team, in addition to her match-high 11 digs. Freshman libero Naara Ortega, with 2 service aces and 2 assists, also managed to notch up seven digs.
In the afternoon match against Mesa, Brewer (6 D) led with seven kills, while Ceballos (5 D) and sophomore middle blocker Zyra Green (2 A, 1 D) had six kills each.
Salmon (3 digs) continued her strong performance, leading the team with 18 assists, while freshman setter Eva Becerra added three service aces and six digs.
Looking ahead, the Mounties are set to face Mt. San Jacinto on Wednesday, September 6, for a non-conference match. They will then host their second Tri-Tournament next Friday, September 8, welcoming Grossmont and Moorpark.
