Comets open conference with win over Spartans

SAN MARCOS, CA (9/15/2023) -- On Friday night, the Palomar College Women's Volleyball team opened conference play against rival MiraCosta College and won 3-1 for the first time since 2015. 

The Comets took set one 25-20 in front of a rowdy crowd in the Dome. The Spartans responded with a 25-20 set two win, but the Comets pulled away in sets three and four (25-17, 25-16) to secure their second consecutive win.

Freshman Janell Spires has been electric for the Comets and Friday night was no exception. She led the team with 16 kills on 32 attacks and hit .406. She also recorded a team-high 12 digs. Freshmen Delinah Becker and Sonsi Jarvis got in on the action as well finishing with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Jarvis also totaled 11 digs and four aces. Sophomore setter Mayar Swillens finished the night with 35 assists, two digs and one kill. Sohomore Hope Ihem and freshman Birsa Necochea combined for six blocks in the middle. 

Palomar improves to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in conference. They will face Grossmont College on Wednesday night in the Dome for a 5 p.m. first serve.
