After spending last season as a club sport, the Cerritos College beach volleyball team kicked off their inaugural season with a pair of wins on Friday. The Falcons posted a 3-2 win over San Diego City College and a 4-1 victory over host Golden West College. Next Friday, Cerritos (2-0) will host Mt. San Jacinto College and Riverside City College at Belmont Shores in Long Beach.

In the opening win over the Knights, the #2 doubles pair of Brisa Cortez (Schurr HS) and Jasmine Soto-Castro (Schurr HS) posted a 25-23, 25-18 straight set victory, while the tandem of Madison Borja (La Mirada HS) and Monserrat Rodriguez (Gahr HS) opened with a tough 21-18 win and followed that with a comfortable 21-6 win to register the sweep.

Cerritos closed out the match when #5 pair of Jenni Solano (La Mirada HS) and Emily Gutierrez earned a 21-11, 21-11 victory. The top duo of Jayda Harris-Amete (La Mirada HS) and Leeya Rubio (Schurr HS) dropped their first set, 16-21, but responded with a 21-16 win to extend the match to a third set. However, they fell, 15-10, but the team had already secured the win. Lillianna Peterson (California HS) and Juliette Casillas (La Serna HS) also went three sets, but came up short, 18-21, 21-10, 8-15.

Although it was a 4-1 win over the Rustlers, the Falcons won three of their matches in a third set tie-breaker. Soto-Castro and Cortez found themselves down, 10-4 in the third set after splitting their first two sets, 16-21, 21-18. Soto-Castro recorded three aces in a row to help them draw even, 10-10, where the teams switched sides. The duo then rode that momentum to their 15-13 win in the deciding set.

Also winning in three sets was the pair of Borja and Rodriguez, who pulled out a 15-11 win in the third set after splitting the first two sets, 21-16, 16-21. Also winning in three sets were Peterson and Casillas, 21-9, 15-21, 15-10. In the #5 set, Solano and Gutierrez posted a 21-16, 21-11 sweep.
