TORRANCE, Calif. --- El Camino College dropped a pair of 3-1 decisions to College of the Canyons and Grossmont on Friday at the ECC Gym Complex.

CANYONS 3, ECC 1

The Cougars downed the Warriors in four sets (25-22, 17-25, 25-15, 25-13) in the opening match of the day. Sophia Ortiz led the way offensively with a double-double, knocking down 11 kills with 18 digs but also committed 13 attacking errors.

The offense struggled mightily as a whole, hitting at a .018 clip. Perla Lopez dished out 27 assists and Morgan Knight had four blocks (two solo) in a losing effort.

GRIFFINS 3, ECC 1

The Warriors started out things much better in the final match of the day as they took a 1-0 lead thanks to a blistering first set that saw them attack at an excellent .382 clip, committing just three attack errors on 34 attempts.

In the second set, the Warriors looked ready to cruise to a 2-0 advantage as they led 22-14 late in the set. But the Griffins offense clicked from there as they ran off six straight points to cut the deficit to just two. The Warriors made it 24-21 and had three set points but the Griffins got two kills from Kate Beezer and an ace from Mercedes Lopez to tie things up.

The Warriors would have four more chances to close out the set but the Griffins anwered every time and then finished off the comeback with three straight points on a Warriors attack error and kills from Beezer and Chelsee Trendler with the clincher to tie the match at 1-1.

The Griffins rode the momentum the rest of the way, cruising to an easy win in the third set and leading by as much as 10 points in the set, which proved important as the Warriors managed to cut the deficit in half at 19-14. But it was too late as the Griffins remained unbeaten on the season, collecting their sixth win while the Warriors dropped their fifth straight to start the 2023 campaign.

The Warriors will return to action on Wednesday evening at the ECC Gym Complex when they host Orange Coast at 5 p.m.
