Women's volleyball team finishes 1-1 at San Diego Mesa Quad

Irvine Valley's women's volleyball finished with a 1-1 record in the San Diego Mesa Quad event on Friday afternoon.

IVC, ranked No. 5 in the state, dropped its first match of the season, falling to host Mesa in four sets in the last contest of the day.

Irvine Valley (5-1) opened the day with a 25-14, 25-18, 25-14 victory over MiraCosta in a 2 p.m. contest.

It was Irvine Valley's second sweep in a row over the Spartans.

Against MiraCosta, sophomore outside hitter Tessa Marocco and freshman outside hitter Tatum Pongs each finished with 11 kills and sophomore middle blockers Natalia Brandlin and Avery Bennett each had six kills.

Brandlin also chipped in three blocks and Bennett had three aces.

Sophomore setter Mia Bertolone ended with 33 assists and five digs and freshman libero Audrey Fowler had 25 digs.

Irvine Valley hit .231 as a team. 

The Lasers had a tougher time against Mesa. The Olympians came out on top, 25-16, 19-25, 25-21, 25-23, to improve their record to 9-0 overall.

Mesa jumped up to No. 2 in the state this week.

Irvine Valley hit just .098 as a team in the contest.

For IVC, Marocco finished with 12 kills, six digs and four aces and Pongs ended with 10 kills and 11 digs.

Bertolone had 34 assists and 15 digs, Fowler contributed 20 digs and sophomore opposite Ava Guenther chipped in seven kills and three aces.

The Lasers are back at home next Wednesday, hosting Santa Barbara City at 6 p.m.
