SBVC Rolls Early, Holds Off Southwestern for Victory

Home openers are always an exciting time for a team and its fans.

And the San Bernardino Valley College women's volleyball team gave the crowd of more than 300 spectators plenty to be excited about.

The Wolverines used a dominant first set, rallied from an early deficit to roll in the second set, then held off a late rally by visiting Southwestern College to complete a victory, 25-15, 25-14, 25-23. SBVC is now 2-0 under the direction of new coach Robert Vansant.

SBVC's attack came from all positions on the court, as Loleaulelei Mamea led the way with 10 kills in 21 attempts, and four blocks. Manaia Mamea added seven kills in 24 attempts without an error.

But one of the Wolverines' most potent weapons was Annika Ferreras from the service line. The setter, who was credited with 14 assists, also had eight aces, and was at the service line during long stretches in the first and second sets, as the Wolverines took control of each one.

The Wolverines will head back on the road, participating in the LA Mission Tournament this weekend. They will return home Sept. 22, taking on Imperial Valley in SBVC's final nonconference game.
