Pirates fall to Grossmont to end 2023 season

CALISTOGA -- The Orange Coast College beach volleyball team saw its outstanding 2023 season come to an end on Thursday as the Pirates fell to Grossmont College, 3-2, in pool play of the CCCAA Beach Volleyball Team State Championships, hosted by West Valley College.

The Pirates (18-3) picked up their two wins courtesy of the Nos. 2 and 3 matches as the duos of Jesse Coralle and Lexy Mendoza pulled out a 21-13, 21-10 win over GC's Haven Del Guidice/Amanda Pena. And ... at No. 3, the Pirate twosome of Paige Cutwright and Alexandra Selivanov pulled away from the Griffins' duo of Rylee Suggett/Aly Guise, 21-10, 21-13.

At No. 1, the Pirate pair of Brisa Zapata-Reaves/Corinne Williams nearly toppled Grossmont's top pair of Madi Bogle and Alana Embry, but the Griffins prevailed with a 17-21, 21-13, 17-15 win to advance to the championship finals, where they eventually defeated Ventura, 3-2, to capture the CCCAA crown.

With the pool play decided after the second match, the third match between Cabrillo and OCC was not played, with Coast awarded a 5-0 win by forfeit. With pairs championships set for Friday and both teams showcasing a combined six pairs in the competition, it was decided that the unnecessary match would not be played.

The pairs of Zapata-Reaves/Williams (seeded sixth) and Cutwright/Selivanov (seeded 19th) will compete for the pairs state championship on Friday-Saturday at West Valley College.
