SARATOGA, Calif. – The Queen song "We are the Champions" was blaring on the sound system at the Beach Volleyball courts at West Valley College Thursday (May 11), after the final attack by the tandem of Hannah Werner and Chelsea Trendler hit the sand.
The match was close throughout against Ventura.
The next pair to finish was the 3s. Ventura's pair of Aven Carter and Kaley Mulville swept the Griffins to make it one point for each team.
Ventura's 2s took care of business to put Ventura up two points to none.
But, this is where the Griffins flipped the switch.
Grossmont's 1s (Madi Bogle and Alana Embry) defeated Auburn Rojello-Moreno and Kayla Murdoch in two sets to get the Griffins on the board , 2-1 VC. Bogle and Embry are the Nations Top ranked pair.
Lauren Dumo and Kortney Hitt are Grossmont's 4s. They took their match in a sweep to even the match up at two matches a piece.
The Werner/Trendler pair droped the first set, but came back and persevered through a fierce fight from Ventura's pair as they held onto take the second set.
The final set was back and forth. GC went up early 3-2 on the first switch. On the second switch, Ventura had come back to tie it up at 5-all. Grossmont went u 8-7 and eventually 12-8. In the final set, it is first to 15, win by two points. A few points later, after VC had inched a point closer, it was Set, Match and Championship point at 14-11.
This is Grossmont's third State Title since Beach Volleyball became a sport in 2015.
