The 2018 women's soccer season is about to begin and both the defending champions from the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference have been picked to repeat. The sports information directors in the conference chose San Bernardino Valley College to defend the north and San Diego Mesa College to repeat in the south.
PCAC North
San Bernardino Valley took home all seven first place votes from the sports information directors of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, making them the clear-cut favorites among the voters. A solid battle was waged between Mt. San Jacinto College and MiraCosta College for second place, with MSJC holding a slight edge in the voting.
San Bernardino Valley cruised through conference play in 2017, finishing 9-0-1 in the PCAC and 20-2-2 overall. The Wolverines made it all the way to the Southern California Regional Finals before losing to Santiago Canyon College, 2-0, and falling one game short of a berth in the CCCAA State Tournament.
San Bernardino lost a handful of players to graduation, but returns a number of key components from last year's squad. Karen Jacobs (F), Drew Cason (M) and Monica Garcia (D) all return to the lineup in 2018, giving San Bernardino Valley strength and experience on all three levels. The Wolverines open the season looking for revenge with an opening date at Santiago Canyon on September 1.
PCAC South
San Diego Mesa was chosen to repeat in the PCAC South, taking home five of the seven first place votes. The race for second was very tight, with Southwestern College edging out Grossmont College by a nose for second place.
San Diego Mesa finished 8-1-1 in the PCAC South last year and 14-5-2 overall. The Olympians waged a solid battle against Cerritos College in round one of the CCCAA Southern California Regional Playoffs before falling to the Falcons in overtime, 2-1.
Like the aforementioned San Bernardino Valley, Mesa lost a number of players to graduation but has some key contributors returning. Madison Cosgrove (F), Leslie Barreras (M) and Karlyn Ironside (D) were all key factors in the success of the 2017 squad and give the Olympians a wealth of experience. San Diego Mesa opens the season on August 28 at Allan Hancock College.
