MiraCosta and Grossmont open as the favorites

The 2018 women's volleyball season starts up next week and the sports information directors in the conference have chosen MiraCosta College and Grossmont College as the favorites.  A new program also starts up in San Diego Miramar College.

The Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has a rich history in women's volleyball, sending a program to the CCCAA State Tournament in three of the past five seasons.  Grossmont College is the lone PCAC program to win a state title, capturing the hardware in both 1987 and 1989.

PCAC NORTH

MiraCosta took home all seven first place votes in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Sports Information Director's Poll as the SID's list the Spartans as the heavy favorites.  Mt. San Jacinto College edged out both Palomar College and College of the Desert for second place in the poll, taking home four second place votes.

MiraCosta College has a new coach in Chris Muscat, who spent seven seasons at Loyola Chicago.  He inherits a hot program at MiraCosta as the Spartans have captured the past two north division titles, going 16-0 in PCAC play over the past two seasons.   MiraCosta finished 26-7 in 2017, making it all the way to the quarterfinals of the state tournament before falling to San Joaquin Delta College, 3-1.  The Spartans ripped off 19 straight wins heading into the state quarters, including a 3-0 sweep of PCAC perennial power Grossmont College.

MiraCosta welcomes back a pair of players from last season's squad in Halie Hess and Camryn Seaman and also enticed a couple of transfers as Ruki Kennedy made the move from UC Davis while Kace Hele came over from Los Angeles Pierce College.    The Spartans open the season at home on August 29 against Cuesta College.

(*) A new program was erected in the PCAC as San Diego Miramar College opted to add women's volleyball for the 2018 season.  The Jets will be under the guidance of Mark Smith, who led the men's program to the playoffs in the spring.

PCAC SOUTH

Grossmont College received six of the seven first place votes in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Sports Information Director's Poll.  The Griffins have been a dominating force over the past decade in the PCAC and the SID's believe the trend will continue.

Grossmont finished 21-7 overall and 9-1 in PCAC South play last season, making the Southern California Regional Tournament before falling to eventual state champion Irvine Valley College, 3-0.  The lone blemish in south play was against San Diego City College, who edged out San Diego Mesa College by an eyelash in the SID's poll for second place.

Grossmont returns a couple of key components from last season's team in Alexcis Morris and Erin Roberts.  Morris led the squad with 269 kills while Roberts led the team with 610 assists.  Grossmont open the 2018 campaign on August 29 at home against Mt. San Antonio College.

San Diego City lost a lot to graduation, but return outside hitter Maleah Weakland and middle blocker Elise Sanzeri.  The Knights open play on August 29 at Los Angeles Harbor College.
