Grossmont athlete earns POW honor

The California Community College Women's Volleyball Coaches Association has awarded Teresa Ochoa of Gavilan College and Alexis Vanlandingham of Grossmont College its Northern California and Southern California Players of the Week honors, respectively, for the week ending Sept. 9.

Playing in five matches last week, Ochoa (pictured left) was a major factor in Gavilan's first-ever Delta College Classic title. This included wins over Big-8 powers Sierra, San Joaquin Delta and American River Colleges, in addition to reigning Central Valley champion Fresno City. For the week, Ochoa amassed 61 kills (3.21 per set). In addition she added 49 digs, just a short of averaging a double-double per match.  She was named All-Delta Classic Tournament.

Vandlandingham (pictred right) has been a force for a Grossmont team off to a 6-1 start this season. In four matches last week, she compiled 37 kills with a .377 hitting percentage. In a win over Cypress, she scored 11 kills and made five blocks. She added eight kills in only 11 swings in another victory over Saddleback.
