Grossmont tabbed the favorites in women’s volleyball

The 2019 season is upon us, which means it is time for the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference sports information directors to conduct a preseason poll.  Grossmont College was listed as the favorites by a narrow margin over San Diego Mesa College and MiraCosta College.

Grossmont is looking to build on a beach volleyball state championship during the spring and has the pieces in place to make a run at an indoor title in 2019.  The Griffins finished 21-6 overall and in third place in the PCAC South last season, with a 7-3 record in conference play.

Grossmont has Haley Morton and Shaney Lipscomb returning for the 2019 campaign along with Carly Gonzalez, who was a part of the 2017 team.  The Griffins made it to the CCCAA Southern California Regional Tournament last fall before falling to Long Beach City College in the opening round (1-3).  Grossmont opens the season on Wednesday at Moorpark College.

Mesa won the PCAC South last season with a 17-13 overall record, going 9-1 in PCAC play.  The Olympians split with Grossmont in 2018 and made it to the second round of the playoffs before losing at Bakersfield College (2-3).  Mesa returns Rachel Wilkocz, Zoe Tippets, Jalesa Poindexter and Amanda Nguyen, giving them a good nucleus of experience on the court.  Mesa opens the season today at home against Pasadena City College.

MiraCosta College finished just behind Mesa in third place in the voting.  The Spartans won the PCAC North Division last season, finishing 22-4 overall and 9-1 in conference play.  MiraCosta made it to the second round of the CCCAA Regional Tournament before falling to El Camino (0-3).  The Spartans are no strangers to the post-season, making the playoffs in each of the last four seasons.  MiraCosta opens the season on Wednesday at home against El Camino College.

Grossmont collected 3-of-5 first place votes in the voting while San Diego Mesa grabbed the other two.
