Mesa up to No. 2 in latest rankings

Some teams got knocked off their perch, others moved up but two teams are shaping up to be very hard to beat as of today, Sept. 11.

San Joaquin Delta held on to its #1 ranking by caputuring its Delta Classic championship for the first time in 15 years while San Diego Mesa is tops in the South and leaped to #2 on this week's CCCWVCA State Top 25 Rankings #2. 

  1. SAN JOAQUIN DELTA, Big 8, 8-0: The Mustangs went a perfect 4-0 to capture their first Delta Classic title since 2008. Delta swept Shasta and Cabrillo, then stopped Lassen's remarkable start-of-the-season win streak at 14 matches with another sweep in the semifinals. In the title match, Delta rallied from a set down to defeat Feather River in four games. Outside hitter Kiyah Irby earned MVP honors after hitting .427 and averaging 4.5 kills in the tourney. Also making all-tourney were OH Emily Vickers and setter Caprisa Brock.  NorCal #1; Last Week's Ranking: #1
  2. SAN DIEGO MESAPacific Coast Athletic, 9-0: The Olympians stayed undefeated by knocking off three previously undefeated teams, two who were ranked ahead of them a week ago. Mesa shot down Ventura and Irvine Valley in 4 each and then swept Cypress. Leading the way was SoCal points leader and OH Kailyn Jager, who earned a State Player of the Week #3 selection.   3. FEATHER RIVER, Golden Valley, 10-3: The Golden Eagles won a rubber match v. Sierra (now 2-1 v. the Wolverines and both wins sweeps) after ending Santa Rosa's 8-match win streak in four sets. FRC then swept Fresno in the semifinals before falling to host SJ Delta in the Delta Classic finals. Making All-Delta Classic tourney team were libero Katherine Gee (75 digs) and opposite Autumn Bennett (32 kills, 14 blocks). NorCal #2; Last Week's Ranking: #4
  4. SIERRA, Big 8, 9-2: The Wolverines have now lost six straights sets to Feather River, but still hold a win v. the Golden Eagles and earned sweeps over West Valley and San Mateo at the Delta Classic. They went five in defeating American River to finish 3-1 at the tourney. OH Taylor Stoltz ripped 27 kills in the ARC win. NorCal #3; Last Week's Ranking: #3
  5. IRVINE VALLEY, Orange Empire, 5-1: The Lasers had two wins v. MiraCosta and the 4-set loss to SD Mesa last week. Libero Audrey Fowler made 63 digs in the three matches. SoCal #2; Last Week's Ranking: #5
  6. VENTURA, Western State North, 6-1: The Pirates were outscored only 93-88 and took the first set in their 4-set loss to SD Mesa. Ventura swept Citrus and Fullerton in its other matches. Libero Autumn Rojelio totaled 57 digs and served 11 aces last week. SoCal #3; Last Week's Ranking: #6
  7. GROSSMONT, Pacific Coast Athletic, 7-1: The Griffins were stunned in a 5-set upset loss to Mt. San Antonio that ended their 6-match win streak. But they bounced back with a 4-set win over Moorpark. OH Kate Beezer landed 33 kills and added 24 digs in the two matches. SoCal #4; Last Week's Ranking: #2
  8. FRESNO CITY, Central Valley, 6-2: The Rams placed third at the Delta Classic with their only loss in three sets to Feather River. Fresno won a slugfest over Solano in five sets, beat San Mateo in 4 and swept upstart Lassen in the third place final. Libero Mia Dilley made the All-Delta Classic tourney team after totaling 73 digs in four matches. NorCal #4; Last Week's Ranking: #10
  9. CYPRESS, Orange Empire, 8-1: The Chargers had their 7-match win streak stopped by Mesa, then swept Canyons. Libero Ashlyn Riddle served four aces in a sweep over El Camino earlier in the week. SoCal #5; Last Week's Ranking: #11
  10. PASADENA CITY, South Coast, 7-2: The Lancers went 3-0 for the week, including an epic 5-set win over Moorpark (16-14). OH Emma Yogan scored 38 kills in the three victories. PCC moves up four spots. SoCal #6; Last Week's Ranking: #14
  11. LASSEN, Golden Valley, 14-2: The Cougars had their 14-match win streak snapped by Delta, then were swept in a close three sets v. Fresno (2-point losses in first and third games) in placing fourth at the Delta Classic. Lassen scored sweeps over Hartnell, Cuesta and Taft, beat Folsom Lake in four, and upset American River in four in a busy 5-2 week. Lassen jumped 10 spots. OH Cayton White made all-tournament, tallying 13 kills, 18 digs and four aces in the ARC victory. NorCal #5; Last Week's Ranking: #21
  12. MT. SAN ANTONIO, South Coast, 5-4: The Mounties came out of nowhere to upset Grossmont in five, then swept Moorpark to all of a sudden fly up five slots in the rankings. Earlier in the week, Mt. SAC was an upset victim of its own by Mt. San Jacinto in five. OH Candace Ceballos notched 21 kills, 28 digs, six blocks and four aces in the two big wins.   13. AMERICAN RIVER, Big 8, 5-4: The Beavers went 2-2 at the Delta Classic, losing in four to Lassen before losing a 2-1 lead in a 5-set loss to Sierra (15-11). They swept Butte and beat Cabrillo in four in their other tourney matches. OH Marley Harrison scored 26 kills in the last three contests of the tourney. NorCal #6; Last Week's Ranking: #9
  14. BAKERSFIELD, Western State South, 4-2: The Renegades early sweep over Mt. SAC is starting to look really strong for them. Bakersfield swept Palomar and Santa Ana last week. Aubree Dees had 14 kills, 31 digs and served eight aces in the two wins. SoCal #8; Last Week's Ranking: #16
  15. ORANGE COAST, Orange Empire, 6-1: The Pirates dominated three sweeps last week, outscoring El Camino, Desert and Glendale by an average set score of 25-12.4. MB Mary Masias has been a solid performer. SoCal #9; Last Week's Ranking: #15
  16. LONG BEACH CITY, South Coast, 6-0: The Vikings are also taking control of their matches, going 3-0 on sweeps over Santa Barbara, Santa Ana and Palomar. Setter Enaya Vaielua, leading the state with a .424 hitting percentage, scored 31 kills and 10 aces in the three contests. The Vikings jumped six slots in the rankings.   17. CABRILLO, Coast North, 3-4: The Seahawks finished 2-2 at the Delta Classic, scoring a sweep over Sequoias and shocking San Mateo in five sets. They were swept by Delta and took ARC to four sets in defeat. RS Paola Jacobs had a great tourney in totaling 56 kills and 53 digs in the four matches. Cabrillo climbs seven slots.   18. SAN MATEO, Coast South, 2-5: The Bulldogs are reeling after losing four of five matches, including twice against Sierra (sweep and four), a 4-set defeat v. Fresno, and then the crushing 5-set loss to Cabrillo. It's win was a sweep over Sacramento. Pin Olivia Cooper had 43 kills and 48 digs for the week. CSM dropped 10 spots after it had scored a win over Feather River on Sept. 1. NorCal #8; Last Week's Ranking: #8
  19. MOORPARK, Western State North, 3-4: What a rough week for the Raiders, who dropped all three their matches and are stuck in a 4-match losing streak. Moorpark lost in five to Pasadena, fell in four v. Grossmont, and stumbled in three sets v Mt. SAC. Libero Larissa Dakoske picked up 60 digs for the week. SoCal #11; Last Week's Ranking: #13
  20. WEST VALLEY, Coast South, 4-2: It was an impressive week for the Vikings who beat Santa Rosa in four, edged Solano in five (15-8), then went the distance again to beat Hartnell (15-12) in going 3-1 at the Delta Classic. Although swept by Sierra, WV played well in being outscored, 75-66, and got aboard the top 25 after missing out last week. OH Sophie Ehret pounded the ball at the tourney with 63 kills with 44 digs.   21. SOLANO, Bay Valley, 6-4: The Falcons made heads turn at the Delta Classic, and know how dangerous they can be v. high-end opponents after 5-set losses to Fresno and West Valley. Solano went 2-2 with sweeps over Sacramento and Sequoias. MB Hannah Del Rio was impressive with 38 kills and 15 blocks (eight solo v. WV) in four matches. NorCal #10; Last Week's Ranking: #20
  22. EAST LOS ANGELES, South Coast, 9-1: The Huskies have won four straight and hold a key sweep now over Mt. San Jacinto and its 5-set L v. Cypress in what appears could be the strongest ELAC team in its volleyball history. OH Alejandra Larios scored 17 kills in wins over Chaffey and West Hills Lemoore. ELAC went up three spots.   23. MT. SAN JACINTO, Inland Empire Athletic, 8-4: The Eagles broke off a 7-match win streak, including a major upset of Mt. San Antonio in five (15-11), only to see it end in an upset loss to LA Mission in four. MSJC had beaten LAM in four only 10 days earlier. Mt. San Jacinto climbs on to the rankings for the first time in 2023. OH Brooklynn Thomas was huge in the Mt. SAC victory with 21 kills and 21 digs. SoCal #13; Last Week's Ranking: Not Ranked. 
  24. HARTNELL, Coast North, 4-4: The Panthers got swept by Lassen, but took West Valley to five sets in a loss while notching wins over Butte (four sets) and Sequoias at the Delta Classic. Setter Theresa Habrik recorded 31 kills, 56 assists and seven aces at the tourney. NorCal #11; Last Week's Ranking: #19
    T25. SANTA MONICA, Western State South, 5-3: The Corsairs had a 4-0 week, including a sweep over LA Mission and make the top 25 for the first time since last year. OH Prior Borick had 26 kills, 26 digs and eight aces during the week. SoCal #14; Last Week's Ranking: Not Ranked.
    T25. LOS ANGELES MISSION, Western State North, 7-5: The Eagles have won five of their last six, including a 4-set win over Mt. San Jacinto and sweeps over West LA and Fullerton last week. LAM is one of four teams to make the top 25 after sitting in the Best of the Rest last week. OH Temple Vazquez scored 42 kills for the week, and hit .426 in two weekend wins. SoCal #15; Last Week's Ranking: Not Ranked.

    Rio Hondo, South Coast, 5-3: Last Week's State Ranking: #T25; the Roadrunners swept Santa Ana in their only match last week.
    Santa Rosa, Big 8, 9-3: NorCal #12; Last Week's State Ranking: #12; Bear Cubs lost in five to Butte and went 1-3 at the Delta Classic, ending an 8-match win streak to start season.
    Cerritos, South Coast, 5-0, The Falcons have five sweeps, including over San Bernardino Valley.
    Saddleback, Orange Empire, 4-1, The Bobcats swept Palomar, Chaffey and San Diego City.
    Folsom Lake, Big, 5-2: NorCal #13; The Falcons was swept by Solano, lost to Lassen in four, then swept WH Coalinga and De Anza
    Modesto, Big 8, 7-2: NorCal #14; The Pirates got tripped up by Sequoias in five, then rattled off wins over Cuesta, De Anza and WH Coalinga
    Monterey Peninsula, Coast North, 4-0: NorCal #T15; the Lobos are one of just six teams still undefeated in the state. They beat Taft in four and swept Merced
    Santa Barbara City, 3-5: Last Week's State Ranking: #18; a 3-match losing streak for Vaqueros after swept by LBCC.
    Taft, Central Valley, 7-5: NorCal #T15; The Cougars had a 6-match win streak snapped by MPC after pulling out 5-set Ws over Shasta and Cosumnes River
    Sacramento City, 7-5: NorCal #T15; Last Week's Ranking: #T25; The Panthers went 1-3 at the Delta Classic beating Shasta in four.
    Butte, 3-5, Golden Valley; two 5-set wins for the Roadrunners over Shasta and Santa Rosa (both 15-13 finishes) at Delta Classsic.
    Riverside City, 5-4; The Tigers beat San Bernardino Valley in five after it had lost in a first matchup in four five days earlier.

    Golden West, Orange Empire, 3-1; the Rustlers swept LA Harbor and West LA.
    Canyons, Western State South, 2-5: Last Week's State Ranking: 23; The Cougars were held to just 36 points in a loss to SD Mesa and were swept by Cypress
