PCAC honors Mt. San Jacinto golfer Blundell and San Diego Mesa track & field sprinter Bibbs as its Men’s Athletes of the Week

Mt. San Jacinto College golfer Kieren Blundell and San Diego Mesa College sprinter Cooper Bibbs are Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Men’s Athletes of the Week.

Blundell, a sophomore from St. Peter’s High School in Birmingham, England, finished in a tie for seventh place in the CCCAA State Championships by shooting 74-74 – 148 at Sandpiper Golf Club in Goleta. He missed making the All-State team by one stroke.

Reedley’s Adam Nelson won medalist honors in the tournament with a 36-hole score of 69-72 – 141. Cypress won the team championship by 18 strokes over runner-up College of the Canyons.

Blundell had qualified for the state finals as an individual.

Bibbs, a sophomore from Oceanside High School, advanced to the CCCAA State Track & Field Championships this upcoming Friday and Saturday at Bakersfield College Memorial Stadium in both sprint events with his performance in the Southern California Community College finals hosted by Mesa at Merrill Douglas Stadium.

Bibbs placed fourth in the 100-meter dash in 10.56 and fifth in the 200 meters with a 21.48 time.

Mt. SAC’s Daniel Stokes won the 100 meters in 10.45. Riverside City College’s Antonio Mitchell ran a 21.13 in placing first in the 200 meters.

HONORABLE MENTION

Eric Charles, Baseball, Palomar: After winning their Round 1 Southern California Regional playoff series over College of the Canyons 2 games to 1 by coming back to sweep the Cougars 11-8 and 8-1 in Games 2 and 3, the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference champion Comets had to go on the road to face the No. 3 Southern California seed, Saddleback, over the weekend. Palomar gave the Gauchos everything they could handle on both Friday and Saturday in a Best-of-3 Super Regional Series but lost two straight tough decisions 9-5 and 8-6.

Charles, the Comets’ sophomore left fielder out of Redwood High School in Visalia, had another good post-season series to help give the favored Gauchos a scare.

He went 3-for-5 in the series opener, doubling and driving in two runs. In Game 2 the following afternoon, Charles’  two-run single keyed a five-run rally by the Comets, trailing 5-0, score five runs in the fourth inning to tie the game at 6 runs apiece. But Saddleback held on to win the game down the stretch by two runs.

Charles finished the season with a .333 batting average and a .505 slugging percentage. He scored 24 runs and with his combination of speed and power led the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference on the season with seven triples. During the PCAC season, he finished with a .365 batting average, a .414 on-base percentage and a .571 slugging percentage. He also led the PCAC in conference games with 6 triples.
