On Tuesday, June 8, 2021 the Grossmont College Athletics Department welcomed back its 1977 Golf State Championship trophy. It was a honor and pleasure to do so.

Dave Scott and Gary McMinn were very instrumental in filling the gap between the championship trophy and college.

Dave Scott, former Grossmont golf player and now KUSI reporter, came on the college campus one day to simply hand over the trophy, but the Grossmont College Athletics Department felt it should honor the legacy of the 1977 team another way.

A ceremony was held at Grossmont College to accept the trophy, presented by Gary McMinn. Gary McMinn is the son of Dick McMinn.

Dick McMinn was the head coach of the 1977 State Championship team. He had been holding onto the trophy for over 50 years, in addition to two (2) Southern California Regional Championship trophies from 1978 and 1980.

"I got goose bumps when Gary McMinn started to remove the trophies from his suitcase to begin the dedication ceremony," says Nedra Brown, Associate Dean of Athletics. "Gary was so passionate as he dedicated the trophies back to Grossmont College and felt they were in their rightful place. His dad will be happy to know they are back home."

Coach Dick McMinn was a coach and faculty at Grossmont College for 40+ years as part of the Exercise Science Department. According to his son Gary, his dad loved and celebrated every minute of his time on campus.

Coach McMinn currently suffers from Alzheimer's and does not remember all of his glory days at Grossmont. The trophy ceremony was a great way to keep his legacy alive.

"Golf meant a lot to my dad and meant a lot to me. Grossmont College meant a lot to my dad and it's great to have the trophies back home again," stated Gary McMinn.

Grossmont College Athletics is proud to celebrate the history and tradition of golf as an athletic sport team at Grossmont College. The campus is honored to display the legacy of all those individuals involved in the success of the program.
