Pena and Ambriz named AOTW

SAN DIEGO, CA (11/28/2023) -- With three PCAC teams competing for a 3C2A State Title this weekend, it was only right to celebrate those who help lift their teams to this point. Grossmont College's Amanda Pena and Cuyamaca College's Gerardo Ambriz were key to their teams' success last week.

Pena had six kills, hit .500% in a sweep over MSJC in the first round of playoffs, and followed up with eight kills, hitting .429% in a sweep over Rio Hondo in the second round of playoffs to help lead us to our fourth consecutive state championship appearance. Grossmont has been given the South No. 3 seed and will face North No. 2 Fresno City College on Friday at 4 p.m. at Mt. San Antonio College.

Ambriz had not scored a goal all season. The midfielder, however, scored the game-winning goal against Long Beach City College on Saturday to send Cuyamaca to the 3C2A Semifinals. After winning the 2023 PCAC title, the Coyotes landed a spot in the playoffs and went on to defeat San Bernardino Valley College 2-1, Santa Barabara College 2-1 and finally, Long Beach 2-1. As the South's No. 2 seed, Cuyamaca will face No. 1 Santa Rosa College from the North at 7 p.m. on Friday at Mt. San Antontio College.
