OCEANSIDE, Calif. – The Santa Barbara City College women's basketball team improved its record to 12-3 with an 81-52 victory over the MiraCosta College Spartans on Saturday.

Jaden Bone led the Vaqueros offensively with 19 points.

"Our team was all about defensive intensity," head coach Sandrine Krul said. "The goal is to hold teams to under 55 points, and today's defensive intensity led to our offensive freedom."

Kenedy Nutter  added 13 points to the Vaqueros' effort and Kaylee Bosetti tallied 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and six steals.

"In the last six games, it's been different people stepping up," Krul said. "Once again, it's our bench being the catalyst."

Mariia Shtykova scored nine points off the bench with four rebounds.

The Vaqueros took an 18-12 lead in the first quarter, thanks to six different players scoring in the period.

"The best part of the game is when our team stayed with the game plan to limit fast-break points for MiraCosta," Krul said. "They are a well-coached team, and for us to keep them under their average was all about our philosophy of defense leading to offensive freedom for all our players."

In total, 10 players scored in the victory. The Vaqueros played without leading scorer Isis Poteet.

Santa Barbara recorded 24 assists and 25 steals as a group. "The key is that our team knows we are a team, through and through," Krul said.

The Vaqueros play again on Wednesday, Jan. 8, when they host Moorpark College in the Sports Pavilion at 5 p.m.
