
The San Diego Mesa College women's basketball team is back on the win column after defeating Fullerton College 67-54.
The Olympians, currently ranked 12th in the state and 7th in the South Region by the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA), now hold a 10-3 record while averaging 64.6 points per game. Alivia Gillespie leads the team offensively with 13.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game across 13 games. On defense, Kendal Alloway leads with 9.6 rebounds per game while also contributing 12.7 points and 1.7 assists per game.
Against the Fullerton College Hornets, Kendal Alloway led the charge with 18 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocks, 1 assist, and a steal. Alethze Marquez also had a solid performance with 17 points, an impressive 16 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal, and 1 block. Rayleen Moreno, who has averaged 8.3 points and 3.8 assists per game this season, added 11 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals.
Despite trailing by eight points at halftime, the Olympians rallied, outscoring the Hornets 41-20 in the second half. Their dominance on the boards, outrebounding Fullerton 45-29, and in the paint, where they scored 44 points to the Hornets' 28, was one of the reasons that contributed to the win.
The team returns to action on Friday, January 3 against Irvine Valley College. The Lasers currently hold a 7-8 record and are led by guards Moka Sakai and Samantha Barnett, averaging 12.1 and 11.7 points per game. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start.
