EL CAJON, Calif. - The Santa Ana College Softball team started off the 2025 season with a sweep of the Grossmont Griffins in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
SAC (2-0) drove down the 5 freeway and began the day with an offensive outburst as they defeated the Griffins 12-5 in game one.
Sophomore oufielder Kaitlin Murphy had a big impact in her first game as a Don, going 5-for-5. The transfer from Santiago Canyon also drove in three runs and scored two herself.
Fellow sophomore Aidee Mendoza did her job in the leadoff spot with four walks in her debut. Mendoza, a transfer from Missouri Valley College, added three runs, two RBI and a hit in the win.
Santa Ana also did a solid job on defense as freshman pitcher Gracie Barrios picked up her first win in the circle. The Beckman High grad struck out five in seven innings to keep the SAC pitching staff fresh for game two. Barrios produced on the offensive end as well, posting three hits and a couple RBI in the six hole of the lineup.
The victory gave Head Coach Marissa Ross her 100th win at the helm of the SAC Softball program.
In game two, the Dons took advantage of five Grossmont errors and held off a late rally to earn an 8-5 win.
Freshman Kalani Gonzales got her first win of the season after going six and a third innings. The pitcher from Godinez struck out one and allowed five runs, with three coming in the seventh.
Karen Vasquez was inserted to close out the game, picking up the final two outs for the save.
The Dons will now prepare for their home opener on Thursday when they are set to host No. 11 ranked Cerritos at 2:30 p.m.
