Twenty-eight times during the 2024-25 season, the GCC women's Basketball Team has lined up against the opposition and let their play do the talking for them. They lock down defensively, run circles around their opponents up and down the floor and take the opportunity to possess any loose ball with grit as they hit the floor with reckless abandon.
Such was the case in the Lady Vaqs 58-53 win over San Diego Mesa College Saturday March 1 in the second round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs in the Verdugo Gym.
Malia Ulery led Glendale with 20 points and added eight rebounds and three assists and her ferocious play helped the Vaqs to a wire-to-wire win over the visitors but it was but it was by no means easy as they had a 17 point lead cut down to five in the late stages before the buzzer sealed the win. Shadel Ffrench again led both teams with 17 rebounds and added 10 rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots. Sammy Velasquez added 12 points and Lisette Meza had 10 points, three assists and two steals.
Now 24-4 and seeded No. 4 in the playoffs, Glendale will host No. 6 seeded Chaffey College at 7 pm in the Verdugo Gym on Saturday March 8. Chaffey earned the matchup with GCC with a 80-60 win over East Los Angeles College on March 1.
