Pirates, Jaguars settle for 2-2 draw

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's soccer team is still trying to get on the same page with several new, talented players on the 2023 roster. Steps were made in the right direction on Tuesday as the Pirates battled Southwestern College to a 2-2 draw on Tuesday at the OCC Soccer Complex.

Coast (0-3-2) got off to a fast start, grabbing the lead in the 5th minute when Floresta Damiano slipped a pass over to Devin La Clair, who found the right angle and buried a shot into the back of the net, putting OCC in front.

It stayed that way for most of the first half before a costly penalty in the defensive area gave the Jaguars (2-1-2) a penalty shot. Gael Aguirre stepped up and didn't miss, leveling the match at a goal apiece just before halftime.

In the 66th minute, Grayson Marquez -- off a feed from Yosuke Yokota -- worked his way around several Jaguar players and ripped his attempt past a diving SWC goalkeeper to put Coast ahead, 2-1.

But, in the 80th minute, Aguirre had another opportunity off a pass from Henoc Samba and he scored to even things up at 2.

Both teams had other scoring opportunities, but the goalkeepers for each team made the big saves when required. For the Pirates, Adam Guillen was solid down the stretch and finished with seven saves.

Coast will return to action on Friday at Pasadena City College, beginning at 4 p.m.
