COD Men’s Soccer skewers the Knights, 4-1

COD (3-0-2) grabbed their third win in a row, as the Roadrunners used three first half goals to cruise past the winless San Diego City Knights (0-4-1), 4-1.

The Roadrunners played against the San Diego City Knights for the first time in program history in 1979 and hold a 19-15-5 overall record against the Knights. The most recent time these two teams met was in 2021 and Desert has a 13-6-2 record against the Knights at home.

The Roadrunners made their way onto the scoreboard first, when sophomore forward Jose Calderon, Jr. (Thermal Desert Mirage) connected with freshman defender David Perez (San Bernardino San Gorgonio) in the 20th minute to give the home side a 1-0 lead. In the 26th minute, sophomore midfielder Alexander Munoz-Maldonado (Thermal Desert Mirage) found freshman midfielder Bryan Benitez (Indio Shadow Hills) in front of the Knights net for a 2-0 advantage. Moments later, Calderon, Jr. would grab his third goal of the season, this time via a penalty kick to give the home crowd a 3-0 lead. In the 86th minute, sophomore midfielder Niklas Limbach (Troisdorf, Germany) would lob a pass into Calderon, Jr., who would not be denied for his second goal of the game.

The next match-up for the Roadrunners will be at home against the Taft Cougars on September 12 at 4p. The Roadrunners first competed against Taft in 1999 and hold a 2-3-0 overall record against them. Desert has a 1-0 record in Palm Desert against the Cougars.
