Jaguar Basketball Weekly Round Up: Feb. 10 - Feb. 14, 2025

By Julio Rodriguez

The Jaguars bounced back with two consecutive wins against Grossmont and Mesa and are now in a second-place tie in the PCAC with MiraCosta.

Versus Grossmont, the team played with competitive joy and a combination of excellent team defense and execution.  The Jags went up big 30-12 midway through the first half. Grossmont put up a fight by attempting to exploit the interior defense, but the Jags continued to stay the course and pile on points.

52-31 Jags at the half.

Midway through the second half, freshman forward Derek Edmond electrified The Den with an open court one handed slam, which sealed the game.

Final score, 109-61.

"We knew we had to come into this one hyped," Edmond said. "We all took it personal with the last loss at MiraCosta. We came in with something to prove, and we proved it."

Their second game of the week, at Mesa for a Valentine's Day match. The team started the game with outstanding energy, but Mesa began to attack the lack of size the Jags had on the court. The Jags closed the first half with consecutive defensive stops, turning Mesa's offense into one dimensional.

37-24 Jags at the half.

The first six minutes of the second half, the Jags allowed only eight points compared to the 14 they scored in that time. As the half wound down, the scoring frenzy continued with guards Ayden Lockett & Baron Noble.

Final score, 82-66, Jaguars.

"It's just crazy," Noble said postgame reflecting on the season, "I'm just trying to stay in the moment, finish these two games strong. We got the playoffs coming up, we need these next two games."

Other news, guard Ayden Lockett was selected as Conference Player of the Month for January. Lockett was a contributing factor for the team's 8-1 record in the month of January. He averaged 18.7 ppg, racked up a total of 41 assists, with his two best games being at Cuyamaca and at Grossmont.

"Feels great!" Lockett said, "Coming up short in December, I had it in the back of my mind to get it for January, and I went out and did that, and played well for the month."

After Friday's win, Southwestern & MiraCosta are tied for second place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, while San Diego City has a two-game conference lead headed into the final week of the regular season.
