Coming off a vital 58-54 road win at previously undefeated Miramar on Wednesday, the No. 3 ranked Knights (16-3, 7-0 PCAC) were back at Harry West Gym on Friday night and fought off a feisty Palomar team, 89-71, to extend their win streak to seven.
All five starters scored in double figures for the second straight home game, including sophomore Al Green who had a game-high 22 points.
Alex Crawford put in 18 points on 9-of-13 shooting and brought down six rebounds. Keavie Love scored 15 points, including 3-of-3 on 3-pointers, to go with six boards and three assists.
KJay Bradley, who was named PCAC Athlete of the Week, finished with 16 points and four assists. Dexter Stratton only made one field goal, but made all eight of his free throw attempts for a total of 10 points with five rebounds.
Friday's game was the most intense conference home game the Knights have played so far with players chirping at each other and fans getting a bit rowdy.
Palomar (7-12, 2-5 PCAC) kept the game tight throughout most of the first half and were within one at the 3:24 mark, but that's when the Knights made their move by scoring nine straight points on a Kenny Gonzalez jumper, a Bradley jumper, a Bradley 3-pointer, and a Crawford layup to push their lead to 40-30, and then ended the half up 47-35.
The Comets hung around and tried making several runs at the Knights, but City had an answer every time. Palomar got within 10 midway through the second half, but the Knights hit back with a 10-2 spurt, capped off by a Bradley 3 with 7:40 remaining, that put the Knights ahead by 18.
Palomar scored the next four points, but City responded with five straight that included a Love 3-pointer to give the Knights their largest lead at 82-63 with 4:49 left.
The 7-0 Knights are tied for first in the PCAC with MiraCosta (13-6, 7-0) who defeated Miramar on Friday night. City will travel to MiraCosta on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. with the winner taking sole possession of first place in the conference.
