Despite a 4-5 start to the season, the women's beach volleyball team is showing positive signs to another successful season. Two of the teams losses were to NAIA programs Hope International University (2-3) and Arizona Christian (1-4). These games provided valuable lessons and allowed the coaching staff to learn more about team pairings.
The team is starting to play well. They recently have back-to-back 5-0 wins against San Diego State University and El Camino College. According to Head Coach Kim Lester, 'The beginning of our season started very quickly and without our full team. However, we now how everybody in place, and our pairs are where we need to be. I am happy with where we are at and we just need to continue with the process and get better each day."
Against El Camino College, the line-up featured:
Line 1: Jaiden Mojica / Myah Gomez
Line 2: Ami Lagrimas / Halen Kiefer
Line 3: Layla Folkers / Lia Go Soco
Line 4: Eva Luna / Maria Coronado
Line 5: Rita Nua / Hannah Hetrick
The coaching staff reminds both the young and veteran players to continue working on the skills and strategies that make them feel uncomfortable, especially the ones that they have not mastered. Also, for each player to take risks in executing them, master different shots, and create as many tools as they can in order to use during a match. The goal is always to move through failure quickly, learn from it, and move forward.
On Friday, February 28, the team will face Palomar College in their opening conference game. Coach Lester highlights the importance of these games for postseason play. 'These upcoming matches are absolutely vital for our postseason chances,' Lester adds. 'Each match is meaningful. We will approach one opponent at a time and dedicate ourselves fully to reaching our objectives.'"
