The 2019 baseball season starts this week and the sports information directors from the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference have made their picks.  Defending conference champion Palomar College was chosen by the SID's to repeat.

Palomar captured 4-of-6 first place votes in what turned out to be a wild race for second place in the voting.  Southwestern College ended up narrowly edging out both Grossmont College and San Diego Mesa College in the opening poll of the season as the sports information directors picked the Jaguars second.  Southwestern earned the final two first place votes in the poll.

Palomar finished 28-17 overall and 17-7 in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play last season, winning the PCAC by two games over both Southwestern and San Diego Mesa.  The Comets would go on to win an exciting playoff series with College of the Canyons before getting beat at Saddleback College in the second round of the Southern California Regional Tournament.  Palomar is expected to return a handful of guys from the 2018 team, including All-PCAC performers Michael Galvan, Matthew Ornelia and Mitchell Moralez. 

Southwestern finished 26-15 overall and 15-9 in PCAC play a year ago.  The Jaguars were forced to go on a long trip to Cuesta College for a Wild Card Game in the Southern California Regional Tournament, falling to the Cougars.  Southwestern is expected to return a handful of players from last year's squad, including All-PCAC selections Ricky Yoquigua and Jorge Martinez.

Grossmont finished in fourth place in the PCAC last season, going 22-18 overall and 13-11 in PCAC play.  The Griffins dropped four of their final five games of the season to miss the playoffs just a year after winning the state title in 2017.  Grossmont is expected to be back in the mix this season with the return of All-PCAC pitchers Bailey Roberson and Ian Thompson. 

San Diego Mesa finished tied for second place in the PCAC a year ago, finishing 22-19 overall and 15-9 in conference play.  The second place finish by the Olympians was the best finish since finishing in a three-way tie for the conference title in 2012.  Mesa is hoping that the potential return of All-PCAC performers Isidrio Velez, Victor Ceniceros and Jacob Engel can ascend them to the top of the standings during the 2019 campaign.
