Cuyamaca College Men's Soccer Completes Unforgettable Journey to State Championship

Cuyamaca College men's soccer team achieved a historic feat on December 15, 2024, by clinching the 3C2A State Championship with a commanding 2-0 victory over Butte College. This momentous win crowned a remarkable postseason journey that showcased resilience, teamwork, and an unyielding drive for excellence.

A Road Paved with Challenges

As the No. 10 seed in the Southern California Regional, Cuyamaca embarked on an inspiring underdog story. Their journey began with a thrilling 2-1 victory over No. 23 Palomar College on November 20. They followed up with another 2-1 win against No. 7 Santa Monica College in the second round.

In round three, they edged past No. 15 Pasadena City College, again by a 2-1 scoreline, before shutting out conference rival No. 19 MiraCosta College 2-0 in the fourth round to reach the state semifinals. Facing No. 3 seed Canada College, Cuyamaca triumphed 2-1 in double overtime, securing their place in the championship match.

Championship Match Highlights

The final game saw Esteban Salais shine, scoring both goals to secure the Coyotes' victory. The first goal came in the 11th minute when Salais capitalized on a perfect assist from Ali Almaliki. Salais sealed the game in the 60th minute with a solo effort, showcasing his poise under pressure.

Cuyamaca outshot Butte 9-8, with seven shots on goal, and their defense, led by goalkeepers Broward Maryan and Pablo Torres, recorded a clean sheet. The Coyotes effectively neutralized Butte's attacks, allowing only two shots on target.

Season in Numbers

Throughout their postseason run, Cuyamaca was a force to be reckoned with:

  • Goals: 12 scored in six games, averaging 2.0 per match.
  • Defense: Only four goals conceded in the postseason, with two clean sheets.
  • Key Player: Esteban Salais led the team with four goals and one assist in the playoffs, including three game-winners.
