With a third of the PCAC games in the books the race for the top of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference standings is tight.  Three teams are tied for first place with another lurking.

Palomar has won five straight PCAC titles in softball, but has some company at the top of the standings in 2019.  The Comets are tied with both San Diego Mesa and Southwestern while San Diego City is just one-half game behind. 

Palomar is 16-4 overall and 5-1 in PCAC play.  The Comets were ranked No. 5 in the state and No. 3 in Southern California in the latest 3CFCA poll on March 4.  Their lone loss in conference play came against Southwestern, 2-1, last Wednesday.  Palomar has a .375 team batting average, led by Sarah Fisher (.484), Megan Wachholtz (.456) and Allie Hughen (.400).  The Comets also have a team ERA of 1.58 on the mound.

Southwestern has been close the past five seasons and finds themselves at 12-8 overall and 5-1 in PCAC play.  The Jaguars' lone loss in PCAC play was to Desert (6-1) on February 22, but since then has ripped off four straight wins, including the one against Palomar.  Southwestern is hitting .315 as a team, led by Cassandra Van Til (.406).  Gertrude "Trudie" Nixon has been a workhorse on the mound for the Jaguars, starting 10-4 with a 1.78 ERA and the programs first-ever no-hitter.   

San Diego Mesa is another off to a quick start as the Olympians are 17-6 overall and 5-1 in PCAC play.  Mesa has been hot since falling to Palomar 8-0 on February 22, ripping off wins against San Bernardino Valley (16-0), San Diego City (13-12), Desert (4-2), Grossmont (8-6) and Imperial Valley (10-3).  Mesa has been scoring runs in bunches and has a .359 team batting average.  The Olympians are led by Kaleigh Lane, who has a .507 batting average and a .986 slugging percentage.  Andrea Wright (.460) and Annemarie Fischer (.408) have also started hot while Dylana Guyon is second on the team with five home runs.

San Diego City is another in the hunt as the Knights are 7-6 overall and 5-2 in PCAC play.  San Diego City suffered a loss in a shootout to San Diego Mesa (13-12) and fell to Palomar (5-1) but has averaged nine runs-per-game in their five wins.  The Knights have two of the hottest hits in the state in Sabrina Figueroa (.615) and Vanessa Tirado (.512), while Fugueroa has started 7-4 on the mound.
