Clavel and Lutz named Pitcher and Player of the Year

SAN DIEGO, CA (4/26/2024) -- A week after claiming their 10th consecutive PCAC Championship, Palomar College brought home more hardware, this time in Guilianna "GiGi" Clavel and Breanna Lutz as the PCAC Pitcher and Player of the Year. The Comets landed eight additional players on the First Team to fill 10 of 12 spots.

Clavel appeared in eight of the 12 conference games and started seven of them to finish 5-0 with two complete games. In 29 innings pitched, she allowed six runs on 17 hits and gave up one home run. She recorded 30 strikeouts and averaged 7.24 per seven. Clavel ended the conference schedule with an ERA of 1.46 and a WHIP of .79. Not only did Clavel succeed in the circle for the Comets, she also found success at the plate. In 18 at-bats she had five hits and scored two runs. She finished with four RBI and walked five times. She had two doubles.

Lutz, a dominant force at the plate for the Comets, hit an impressive .632 in the 12 conference games this season. In 38 at-bats, she finished with 24 hits, nine doubles, one triple and 13 RBI. She walked five times, stole bases and came around to score 20 times. Lutz also never struck out in a conference game. At first base, she recorded just two errors on 59 total chances to finish .966. She was involved in one double play. 

Faith Steffany, Itzell De Los Rios, Kayla Visser, Josephine Heuberger, Nevaeh Haywood, Tess Altevers-Harris, Isabella De Filippis and Maddie Scott were also named to the First Team. Southwestern College's Madison Mendez and San Diego Mesa College's Carlotta Gonzalez were also named to the First Team. Clavel, Lutz, Steffany, Mendez, De Los Rios, Gonzalez, Visser and Heuberger have been nominated to the All-State Team as well.
