Spartans win first-ever PCAC title

The MiraCosta College women's basketball team won at least a share of its first-ever Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship on Wednesday night with a 59-52 victory over Palomar College.  The Spartans have now won 10 straight games.

MiraCosta entered the season ranked right behind Palomar College by the conference SID's in a pre-season poll.  The Spartans outsmarted the SID's, winning at least a share of the title on Wednesday night.   It was a second straight win against Palomar after beating the Comets 55-51 earlier in the season.

MiraCosta had never finished higher than second in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference since bringing back basketball in 2007-08, a feat they managed back in 2010-11 when they finished 7-5 in PCAC play and 10-15 overall.

MiraCosta has two games remaining on the schedule as they host San Diego City College on Friday and then travel to San Diego Mesa College next Friday.  The Spartans entered the week ranked No. 15 in the state and No. 9 in Southern California by the California Community College Sports Information Association.  They also entered the week ranked No. 11 in Southern California by the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association.  They are likely to rise much higher following the win on Wednesday night.

MiraCosta is led by Chynna Cochran, who averages 17.9 points-per-game.  Cochran was named the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference female athlete-of-the-month for January.
