
SAN DIEGO, CA (10/9/2024) -- The race for the top spot in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference has never been more intense. After the first round of conference play, Southwestern College and MiraCosta College are tied at 7-0-1, with both teams displaying dominance on both ends of the field. Their head-to-head matchup played at Southwestern, ended in a 0-0 draw, leaving both teams unbeaten and hungry for the second half of the season.
Southwestern has scored an impressive 45 goals while conceding just one through nine games, led by standout performances from players like Katelyne Gonzalez and Jenica Stell, and the solid goalkeeping of Aaliyah Campbell. The Jaguars' consistent defense and clinical finishing have been key to their success.
MiraCosta has been equally formidable, scoring 47 goals and allowing only two. Forward Lena Bachman has been a key player for the Spartans, leading the team with 11 goals and three assists, including four game-winning goals. Midfielder Shelby Maldonado has also been a standout, contributing six goals and four assists, while Charley Diaz has chipped in with four goals and three assists.
As both teams enter the second round of PCAC play, the race for the conference title is shaping up to be a two-team showdown. However, San Diego Mesa College (6-2) and San Diego Miramar College (5-3) remain in striking distance, while Palomar College sits at 4-4. The second half of the season will be crucial, especially with a highly anticipated rematch between Southwestern and MiraCosta looming, which could very well decide the conference champion.
With both teams tied at the top, every game counts as the season progresses, and both Southwestern and MiraCosta will need to maintain their unbeaten form to claim the coveted conference title.
