Men’s Volleyball Falls to Grossmont in Three
The Santiago Canyon College men's volleyball team has one win under its belt in the last seven matches, but looked to etch another win in the record column as they hosted the Grossmont College Griffins for the second time this season. The Hawks got off to a strong start by holding a five-point led in the first set, but eventually faltered down the stretch leading to a 3-0 loss.
Six different players recorded at least two kills with freshman CJ Hustedt pacing the pack with five kills. He added two digs and two block assists in the process. He currently ranks second on the team with 37 kills and a 1.76 kills-per-set ratio.
Backing him on the offensive front was freshman Josiah Saldana who was a perfect 4-for-4 in attempts. He rose up for two solo stuffs to go along with five digs. Freshman Arturo Gomez matched his kill output with four kills accompanied by three block assists, two digs and a solo block.
The Hawks utilize a two-setter system featuring sophomore Jonathan Chavez Calderon and freshman Ian Nelson. Each lofted up 11 assists to share the offensive load. Nelson also recorded a block assist and a dig.
The Hawks have competed against strong competition that reigns mainly from the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC). Their lone victory was a 4-1 triumph over Antelope Valley in early February. They will continue action on the road on Wednesday, February 28 where they take on the Palomar College Comets on the road at 6 p.m.
