The Knights got a much-needed 2-1 victory at Mesa on Friday with Brett Woodworth scoring the game-winner on a penalty kick in the second half to help City improve to 2-3 in the PCAC with seven games remaining.
City's leading scorer, Isaac Velazquez, got the Knights on the board in the 20th minute when defender Akuar Yamun sent in a pass that Velazquez headed in for his 13th goal of the season, which is tied for third most in the state.
The game was tied, 1-1, at halftime, but City kept pressing for the go-ahead goal and they got their chance in the 60th minute when a Mesa foul in the box gave the Knights a penalty kick, which Woodworth converted in what ended up being the game-winner. It was Woodworth's 10th goal of the year, which is tied for the sixth most in the state.
Velazquez and Woodworth have combined to score 23 goals, which is tied for the second-most in the state for a duo on the same team.
Sebastian Guillen was given a red card in the 85th minute, but had six saves up to that point. He now has 100 on the season, which is the most saves in the state.
The Knights are back home on Tuesday as they host MiraCosta at 3 p.m. City currently sits in fifth place in the PCAC and MiraCosta is third, but there is plenty to play for with seven games left. The Knights are more than capable of putting together a string of wins to move up in the standings.
