SAN DIEGO, CA (3/3/2023) -- The PCAC opener is upon the 2023 season and the San Diego City College Knights are off to their best start since the 2010 season, when they won the conference title. Right behind are the Palomar College Comets, the conference's lone postseason representative, with a 8-5 record. Grossmont College closes out the top three teams with a 7-5 preconference record.

It's a tale of two teams right now as the Comets have the best offense and the Knights have the best pitching. The two will face off in the first round of conference play. The Comets have quickly racked up 131 runs on 163 hits through 13 games so far this season. The team's slash line is .331/.432/.476. In the span of a week and a half, the Comets scored 93 runs, including a three-game stretch of 20+ runs a game. The Knights's pitching staff has totaled 136 strikeouts, avergaing 10.2 a game. They've allowed 59 runs on 107 hits and have an ERA of 3.67.

Palomar has played one of the toughest early season schedules in teh conference. For the second year, the Comets swept the Riverside City College Tigers in February. They split their series with Orange Coast College, Saddleback College, Fullerton College and Golden West College. They were up 3-1 against Cypress College after one inning when the game was called for weather last week. San Diego City swept Victor Valley College, LA Harbor College, West LA College and split a pair with College of the Desert and Mt. San Jacinto College.
