Mesa women win SoCal Regional, men place second

SACRAMENTO - Champions were crowned at the 3C2A Northern California and Southern California Cross Country Championships on Friday, with Clovis capturing both the men's and women's banners in the north and perennial powers Mt. San Antonio and San Diego Mesa taking the men's and women's titles, respectively, in the south.

 

At the SoCal Championships, Mt. SAC and San Diego Mesa engaged in a close battle for the top spot, beginning with the first four individual finishers. Jyden Schmid (19:09.4) and Victor Rosas (19:18.3) were first and third for San Diego Mesa while Johnathon Zavala (19:15.7) and Matthew Donis (19:30.5) were second and fourth for the Mounties. Both teams had all five of their scoring runners among the top 17 finishers overall. Mt. SAC tallied 40 points while San Diego Meas was close behind with 43. Bakersfield (99), Riverside City (141) and San Bernardino Valley (202) were the next three.

San Diego Mesa had a little more comfortable win on the women's side, scoring 68 points to Mt. SAC's 91. Riverside (134), Glendale (170) and Allan Hancock (176) finished the top five teams. The race for individual top honors was very close with the top four runners crossing within five seconds of each other, including less than one second between winner Alexis Noble of San Diego Mesa (17:44.6) and Sophia Godina of Ventura (17:47.2). Samantha Medrano from Glendale (17:47.8) and Sequoia Gonzalez of El Camino (17:49.6) taking the next two spots. 

Teams will now turn their attention to the 3C2A Championships at Woodward Park on Nov. 18.
