Grossmont and Mesa hold steady in new poll

Grossmont and Mesa hold steady in new poll

Several conference champions in women's volleyball have emerged as part of this week's CCCWCA State Top 25 Rankings Week #10.

No. 9 Ventura, #15 Moorpark and #20 Santa Barbara City Colleges, barring upsets this week, could finish in a 3-way tie for the Western State Conference North Division title after Ventura completed a 3-way deadlock by defeating the Vaqueros last week.

Other teams in the driver's seat or already tied for clinching conference titles include state #1-ranked San Joaquin Delta in the Big 8, #2 Feather River in the Golden Valley, #3 Grossmont in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, #6 Fresno City in the Central Valley, #12 Rio Hondo in the South Coast, #13 Solano in the Bay Valley, and #22 Hartnell in the Coast North.

The conference titles still up for grabs are the Coast South in the North and the WSC North, Orange Empire, WSC South and Inland Empire Athletic Conference in the South.

  1. SAN JOAQUIN DELTA, Big 8, 24-0: The Mustangs have won 27 consecutive sets with last week's sweep over Folsom Lake. They have clinched at least a tie for the Big 8 title at 13-0. NorCal #1; Last Week's Ranking: #1
  2. FEATHER RIVER, Golden Valley, 22-5: The Golden Eagles swept Redwoods and Shasta last week to extend their GVC win streak to 61. They are 8-0 and have won all 24 sets v. GVC opponents to lead that conference. NorCal #2; Last Week's Ranking: #2
  3. GROSSMONT, Pacific Coast Athletic, 21-1: The Griffins extended their win streak to 15 and all but clinched the PCAC title by sweeping #4 San Diego Mesa, 25-21, 29-27, 25-16, for their second win v. the Olympians. While RPI may say otherwise, Grossmont has solidified its standing as tops in the South for now. Libero Avery Banaag was a State Player of the Week #11SoCal #1; Last Week's Ranking: #3
  4. SAN DIEGO MESA, Pacific Coast Athletic, 21-2: The Olympians had their 7-match win streak snapped by Grossmont and while they are 21-0 v. everyone else not nicknamed the Griffins, they have to settle for 0-2 v. their nemesis.  SoCal #2; Last Week's Ranking: #4
  5. SIERRA, Big 8, 21-4: The Wolverines continue to win, but the going is getting tougher after a 4-set triumph over Cosumnes River (94-85) and needing five sets to get past Santa Rosa, 23-25, 25-14, 25-17, 19-25, 15-11. NorCal #3; Last Week's Ranking: #5
  6. FRESNO CITY, Central Valley, 20-4: The Rams swept Porterville and Taft to extend their recent streak to 12 straight victories. The CVC win streak now is at 174. Fresno leads the CVC at 14-0 but have yet to clinch the title thanks to pesky West Hills Coalinga (14-1). NorCal #4; Last Week's Ranking: #6
  7. AMERICAN RIVER, Big 8, 19-6: The Beavers swept Folsom Lake and Cosumnes River to reach six straight wins. NorCal #5; Last Week's Ranking: #7
  8. IRVINE VALLEY, Orange Empire, 17-3: The Lasers swept Fullerton and now have a big match v. Orange Coast this week as they trail Saddleback with one match at hand in the tight OEC race at 11-2. SoCal #3; Last Week's Ranking: #8
  9. VENTURA, Western State North, 17-3: The Pirates beat Santa Barbara for the second time in a must-win match (four sets) to create the 3-way division tie, and an early season win v. Pasadena (beat Moorpark) plus going 2-0 v. Orange Coast and Santa Monica when Rio Hondo was 0-2 v. same two has lifted them back to the top 10. Ventura moves up four spots. SoCal #4; Last Week's Ranking: #13
  10. LASSEN, Golden Valley, 26-3: The Cougars have 19 sweeps this year after winning over Butte and Redwoods. NorCal #6; Last Week's Ranking: #10
  11. CYPRESS, Orange Empire, 17-5: The Chargers beat Golden West in four. They defeated both Rio Hondo and Pasadena in pre-conference, and are 1-1 v. Orange Coast in OEC play. Cypress climbs three slots. SoCal #5; Last Week's Ranking: #14
  12. RIO HONDO, South Coast, 18-4: The Roadrunners swept LA Harbor and have clinched at least a tie for the SCC crown at 13-1. RHC went 1-1 v. Pasadena, 2-0 v. Mt. SAC, and are 1-0 v. Long Beach with one to go v. the Vikings. But RHC's pre-conference results are not helping their cause. They fall three spots. SoCal #5; Last Week's Ranking: #9
  13. SOLANO, Bay Valley, 22-6: The Falcons swept Mendocino and Contra Costa to extend their BVC win streak at 57 matches. They clinched at least a tie for the BVC championship. They fall two rungs on the ladder. NorCal #7; Last Week's Ranking: #11
  14. MT. SAN ANTONIO, South Coast, 15-9: The Mounties' pre-conference wins are looking better and better and with a big 4-set win over Pasadena last week, they are rising at the right time. Mt. SAC is 0-2 v. both Rio Hondo and Long Beach in SCC play, but were 2-0 v. PCC, were the only team to beat Grossmont, they swept Moorpark and Santa Monica, and defeated Orange Coast. Two ratings points up for Mt. SAC. SoCal #6; Last Week's Ranking: #16
  15. MOORPARK, Western State North, 14-7: The Raiders beat Cuesta in four. Their two wins v. Ventura are hard to ignore as well as going five sets in losses to San Diego Mesa, Pasadena, and the two defeats v. SBCC. MC jumps up three positions. SoCal #7; Last Week's Ranking: #18
  16. LONG BEACH CITY, South Coast, 17-3: The Vikings lost to Pasadena in four, and are now 1-1 v. the Lancers. LBCC is 2-0 v. Mt. SAC (both went five sets), they have a 5-set L v. Rio Hondo, but they also lost to East LA in four. A sweep over Santa Barbara is its best non-conference win. This week, Long Beach faces ELAC and Rio Hondo. A 4-spot drop. SoCal #8; Last Week's Ranking: #12
  17. PASADENA CITY, South Coast, 18-7: The Lancers were on a high, having won seven straight with a 4-set win over Long Beach, but they got beat for the second time by Mt. SAC. PCC's hope was to move up as its 1-1 v. RHC, 1-1 v. LBCC, 1-0 v. Moorpark, Saddleback, Santa Barbara, and Bakersfield, but it's a tough South this season. SoCal #9; Last Week's Ranking: #17
  18. WEST VALLEY, Coast South, 17-3: The Vikings continued their winning streak, now at 11 with sweeps over Las Positas and Ohlone. They lead the Coast North at 7-0 and face San Mateo in a big match this Friday. It's a one slot climb for WVC. NorCal #8; Last Week's Ranking: #19
  19. SADDLEBACK, Orange Empire, 17-4: The Bobcats are riding their chances solely on conference play and it's paying off. Saddleback is the surprise leader of the OEC at 12-2 (one win ahead of Irvine Valley) and after sweeping Riverside, they knocked off Orange Coast in four. Winners of seven straight, Saddleback has a few hurdles left in facing Golden West, then Cypress who swept them earlier in conference. It's a catapult of six spots up. SoCal #10; Last Week's Ranking: #T25
  20. SANTA BARBARA CITY, Western State North, 13-10: The Vaqueros swept Pierce before Ventura sent them to a 4-set loss. SoCal #11; Last Week's Ranking: #20
  21. ORANGE COAST, Orange Empire, 14-7: After sweeping Santa Ana, the Pirates were upended by Saddleback for the second time. Early wins over Rio Hondo and Santa Monica are great but this Wednesday, OCC can make big noise if it upsets Irvine Valley. A 6-spot fall. SoCal #12; Last Week's Ranking: #15
  22. HARTNELL, Coast North, 18-6: The Panthers are rolling, stretching their win streak to 14, including sweeps over De Anza and San Francisco. They clinched a tie for the Coast North title at 8-0. A 1-slot slip. NorCal #9; Last Week's Ranking: #21
  23. SANTA MONICA, Western State South, 19-6: The Corsairs have won eight in a row, including an important 5-set win over Bakersfield as the two teams look like they will share the WSC South title.  SoCal #13; Last Week's Ranking: #23
  24. BAKERSFIELD, Western State South, 14-6: The Renegades saw a 9-match win streak stopped by SMC. They lead the WSC South at 10-1 with Santa Monica at 9-1. A 2-slot fall. SoCal #14; Last Week's Ranking: #22
T25. CERRITOS, South Coast, 12-7: The Falcons earned their second win of the season over East LA in five after sweeping LA Harbor. SoCal #T15; Last Week's Ranking: Not Ranked.

San Jacinto and San Bernardino Valley, which keep them ranked. ELAC drops a slot. SoCal #T15; Last Week's Ranking: #24
T25. SAN MATEO, Coast South, 12-8: The Bulldogs swept Gavilan and Skyline, but are eyeing their rematch v. West Valley on Friday. NorCal #10; Last Week's Ranking: #T25
