Olympians and Griffins back in Elite Eight

SAN DIEGO, CA (11/27/2023) -- San Diego Mesa College and Grossmont College are in the 3C2A State Volleyball Championships. 

1 San Diego Mesa d. #8 Mt. San Antonio, 3-1 (25-14, 25-27, 25-14, 25-14): The Olympians (26-2), the second-place team from the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, defeated the Mounties (18-10) for the second time this season only dropping an extra-point second set while controlling each of their set victories. The big story was All-American OH Kailyn Jager, who bombed 30 kills (hit .297), served five aces and made 12 digs. Jaiden Mojica dished out 57 assists and made 20 digs, and Emily Eltrich was outstanding as well with 19 kills (.372) and 18 digs. Jaelyn Douglas picked up six kills and four blocks.

3 Grossmont d. #6 Rio Hondo, 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-14): The PCAC champion Griffins (26-1) ran their win streak to 20 matches in sweeping the South Coast champ Roadrunners. For Grossmont, All-American OH Kate Beezer landed 12 kills and three aces (plus nine digs), All-Region setter Chelsee Trendler gave out 35 assists with nine digs, Avery Banaag made 18 digs (passed at 2.7 rate), Alyson Guise scored eight kills, Amanda Pena had eight kills (.429) and Joanna Verdugo-Del Real added five kills and 14 digs. 

South No. 1 Seed Mesa is set to play North No. 4 American River College at 7 p.m. on Friday at Mt. San Antonio College. Grossmont has been given the South No. 3 seed and will face the No. 2 seed from the North, Fresno City College at 4 p.m. The State Tournament information can be found here.
